Indian Wells Golf Resort Receives 2014 CGCOA Course of the Year

The CGCOA Course of the Year Award is bestowed upon a golf facility that meets criteria in a variety of areas: course quality and resource management, commitment to player development & growth of the game, as well as community outreach.

The 2014 winner of this prestigious award is Indian Wells Golf Resort (Indian Wells, CA), a 36-hole facility, nestled in the Coachella Valley/Palm Springs Region─owned by the City of Indian Wells and managed by Troon Golf.

Exceptional Quality of the Course/s:

Since its redesign in 2006, The Indian Wells Golf Resort has set the bar high when it comes to course conditions and maintenance standards. Both the Celebrity Course and the  PlayersCourse rank among “the best” in California and throughout the country. The Celebrity Course served twice as the venue for the PGA Tour’s SkinsGame.

According to Golfweek magazine both courses are ranked in the Top 25 Best Municipal courses in the U.S. The PlayersCourse currently ranks in the Top 25 Courses you can Play in California. Golf Digest has Indian Wells listed as “Top 50 courses for women” in the U.S.

Greenskeeper.org has recognized Indian Wells Golf Resort with the Best PlayingConditions in Southern California while Trip Advisor has listed the resort as the #4 golf course experience in the country.

Exceptional Quality of Ownership and Management:

The resort’s management team and staff remain true to Troon’s mission: To create extraordinary guest and member experiences through personalized service, consistency, and uncompromising attention to detail.

Conservation and environmental stewardship are important to Troon Golf and its management team. Indian Wells Resort is committed to resource conservation throughout the entire property. With the issue of water being of paramount concern, the course maintenance team continues to work closely with the Coachella Valley Water District and its task force on ways to reduce water usage. The resort has already converted 15 acres of high water use irrigation to a low water drip system.  The golf course superintendent constantly monitors weather data obtained on site to generate transpiration rates and irrigation run times. All irrigation system watering is performed during “low demand” off-peak periods and all water features are operated through the use of timers.

The facility continues to use the latest technology to help ensure that pesticides are used at the lowest possible rate. Both golf courses serve as habitats for active wildlife. At Indian Wells you will also discover healthy fish populations in the numerous lakes found throughout the property.  In support of its commitment to the environment, the resort is seeking certification from Audubon International.

The resorts outstanding Contribution to the Community:

The City of Indian Wells is relatively small, with about 5000 full-time residents. The Indian Wells Golf Resort serves as a community hub for the city. It also serves as disaster relief center if-and-when the need arises.

Throughout the year, the resort hosts gatherings for local residents and offers a discounted golf rate to local property owners.

Indian Wells Golf Resort works closely with the Champions Volunteer Foundation, contributing funds to worthy causes such as:  The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, Desert Blind & Handicapped, People Helping People, Palm Springs Stroke Activity Center, and The Boys & Girls Club, among others. Since 2002, the foundation has raised more than 1.2 million dollars for Coachella Valley charities.

Contribution to the Game:

The resort is committed to the development of golfers and future golfers. The resort takes part in all programs and initiatives rolled out by the PGA of America, and has even developed supporting programs of their own.

The PGA teaching staff at the resort is fully aware that juniors are the future of the game, and has created a JuniorGolfAcademy where children can come to learn the game in a friendly, fun, and safe environment. For families who are financially challenged, scholarships are provided.

Additionally, Indian Wells Golf Resort shares its practice facility with The First Tee of Coachella Valley and often donates clubs and golf accessories for underserved youth.

The resort also provides Get Golf Ready classes─ones that welcome new players to the game─and are extremely affordable too, at just $99 for the 5-lesson series. Free, weekly golf clinics are held for employees of the resort, encouraging their participation in the game.

You can certainly see why Indian Wells Golf Resort, is the 2014 CGCOA Course of the Year….Congratulations!

CHOOSING A WEDDING VENUE

Indian Wells is an ideal wedding destination in California; however, choosing where and what type of venue to have your wedding can be a challenging decision. Oftentimes, your best wedding location may have nothing to do with style, but rather in a place that resonates with your heart! These planning recommendations can help narrow it down.

  1. Who Are Your People?
How large a wedding do you want and whom do you want to come?
  2. High Finance
How much do you want to spend?
  3. Detail Management
Do you have time to manage the hundreds of details involved with wedding planning?
  4. Your Calendar
Your personal calendar is a deciding factor in choosing a location. When can you and your people travel?
  5. Local Weather & Events
Are there major holidays or local events (e.g., the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival near Indian Wells) occurring at your location of choice that impact the time of year you could come?
  6. How Much Planning Time Do You Have?
If you plan to marry in six months or less, your venue options will be limited as many locations book up far in advance.
  7. Guest Management
How much time do you have for the care and management of your guests?
  8. Your Personal Style
Do you want a ballroom or a ranch? Country club or museum? What is your personal style and how can that be reflected in the location you pick?

When you’re feeling overwhelmed and need guidance, a wedding planner can assist you. Expert wedding planners will partner with you to transform your dream wedding day into reality. Wedding planners can oversee the endless details involved in arranging your nuptials – from helping you select invitations to coordinating the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and post-wedding events. An experienced wedding planner with an established network of suppliers can streamline the process and may even be able to save you money so you can enjoy the entire planning experience and the most memorable wedding day.

This is a guest post written by Cathy O’Connell, event designer and co-founder of Celebrations of Joy, www.celebrationsofjoy.com. Cathy is the author of the soon-to-be-published “Write Your Own Rules: a Guide to Alternative Wedding Planning.”

FROM THE SUMMER KITCHEN OF INDIAN WELLS GOLF RESORT EXECUTIVE CHEF CALE FALK

Try this mouthwatering recipe for your next summer dinner party!

Grilled Lamb Loin with Passion Fruit BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

Lamb loin – five ounce (oz.) portion cut
Passion Fruit BBQ Sauce
Ketchup 31 oz.
Passion fruit puree 10.5 oz.
Red wine vinegar 4.25 oz.
Sweet soy 1.25 oz.
Fish sauce 2 oz.
Molasses 3.25 oz.
Garlic powder .25 oz.
Onion powder 1.25 oz.
Liquid smoke .25 oz.
Dried chipotle .7 oz.
Salt to taste
Sesame oil .5 oz.

Instructions

Season lamb with salt, pepper and oil. For BBQ sauce, combine all ingredients in blender except for sesame oil. Blend all until smooth then add sesame oil and incorporate. Season to taste. Marinate lamb in BBQ sauce for at least an hour. Place seasoned lamb loin on hot grill. Cook lamb on one side for 3-4 minutes, brushing with BBQ sauce, then flip and cook on other side for approximately the same amount of time. Pull lamb off the grill once it is at desired temperature – I recommend lamb at medium rare. Once lamb is pulled off the grill, let it rest for a couple of minutes then slice into 1/2-inch thick pieces. Mashed potatoes and English peas make great accompaniments to this dish.
